This private commission painting depicts the battlecruiser HMS Hood, leaving Scapa Flow on 21st. May 1941, to meet the German battleship KMS Bismark.
Although updated throughout the war, she was long overdue for a major rebuild, which, had it been undertaken, would have rendered her more likely to have survived the encounter with Bismark. As it was, she exploded catastrophically with only three out of her complement of 1,421 crew surviving.
